Friendly War of Words - Scrabble for Literacy
Scrabble players enjoyed exercising their word skills at the First Annual ‘Scrabble for Literacy’ Tournament last Saturday.
Over $1400 was raised by the players and pledge donors to support literacy programs offered by the Campbell River Community Literacy Association (CRCLA), in cooperation with Continuing Education – School District 72.
City Councillor Claire Moglove dropped in to play a game with Adult Literacy Instructor Carol Forbes. "I'm glad I can be a part of this event, and I will take the news of its success to council," said Moglove.
“We are thrilled that everyone enjoyed the tournament,” said Nickie Polson, Tournament Director. “Through all three games, some pairs of players kept up a low buzz of earnest conversation and quiet laughter. Others were studiously quiet in their concentration. I believe every one of us – volunteers included – had a great time. We will be happy to do this again next year.”
After the first game, players were matched according to score – allowing everyone to be comfortable playing with others of similar skill levels. Prizes were awarded for top game scores, word scores, and hidden score values.
Overall top score was attained by Randy Pruden of Quadra. Top pledge amount was raised by Brent Hart of Comox.
Money raised will support programs in Adult Literacy, English as a Second Language, and Youth Literacy Tutoring. If you know of someone who would like help in these areas, get in touch with CRCLA.
