Play Scrabble for Literacy   Sat. March 21, 2009

Scrabble Tournament Fundraiser

Saturday March 21 from 10 am - 2:30 pm in the Library at Robron Centre, 740 Robron Road.

Do you wipe out your opponents in Scrabble? Or do you just love to play the game?

Whatever your skill level, indulge yourself on Saturday March 21, and play for a good cause. The CR Community Literacy Association (CRCLA) and Robron Centre are sponsoring their first annual Scrabble Tournament.

“We’re playing one of the world’s favorite word games to raise money to support literacy programs,” said Tournament Director, Nickie Polson of CRCLA. “We plan on having fun while we do it.”

Both advanced and recreational players will enjoy 3 rounds of Scrabble. Players will be matched up with others of similar ability as much as possible. Lunch, beverages and snacks will be provided. Local businesses are generously supporting the event with donations of prizes. Prizes will be awarded to the person bringing the highest total in donations, plus the top score in each game, the highest 3-game total, first person to play special words (“tutor” for instance), and many other special categories.

Pre-registration is required. Registration packages may be picked up at the Robron Centre Office, Coho Books, or MLA Claire Trevena’s office at 908 Island Highway. Completed registrations may be dropped off at the same locations.

To be eligible for an early bird prize, make sure you’re registered by Friday, March 6. Final date for registering is Wednesday March 18.

“Players must bring a minimum of $50 in pledges in order to play. Many of us are used to raising pledged amounts from friends and neighbors for sports,” Polson said. “This event gives us a chance to support another important part of community life – helping people get comfortable with reading, writing, and numbers. Any donation of $10 or more is eligible for a tax receipt.”

Players who are able are asked to bring a Scrabble game with them.
