What is Literacy?
In today's world, we look at literacy skills in six areas: reading, writing, oral communication, math, participation, and information technology. These are the skills needed to achieve personal goals, to develop knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in society.
Campbell River Community Literacy Association (CRCLA) Programs
Volunteer Tutors: The CRCLA trains volunteer tutors to work with individuals wishing to upgrade their literacy skills. We have over 40 volunteers from our community working one-on-one and in small groups with adults and youth.
Adult Literacy: In partnership with Continuing Education, we provide Adult Literacy upgrading at Robron Centre. The classroom is open from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday to Thursday. Tutors work with individuals one-on-one or in small groups.
English as a Second Language: Evening classes in English as a Second Language are offered from 6 -8 pm on Monday and Thursday evenings at Robron Centre.Tutors work with students to help build understanding.
Youth Tutoring: Some of our tutors work with youth involved in programs at Robron Centre in order to support their development of literacy skills.
The goals of the CRCLA are to:
- foster literacy in Campbell River and area.
- be a community resource for the gathering and sharing of information that contributes to the development of literacy in the community.
- identify and acquire the resources needed to fulfill the Society's mission.
- develop and offer learning opportunities, programs and services which support literacy in the community.
- support the development of literacy skills for people of all ages, and promote learning cultures in the community.
- provide a forum for discussion of literacy issues in the community.
The CRCLA is a registered non-profit society with charitable status.
Tax receipts can be given for donations of cash, services or other goods.
